 Summary: The chapter starts with a detailed analysis of the requirements for a physical implementation of a quantum information processing systems. Several physical implementations are possible and significant progress has been reported in each of these areas, but a real breakthrough has not been achieved in any of them. From the multitude of proposals for the physical implementation of quantum information processing devices, we have selected only a subset.
