Using the proposed classification criteria, all known interstellar radio messages are divided into two essentially different groups—scientifically based messages and pseudo-messages. Imitation of interstellar transmissions by most of the exo-civilizations can cause the Great Silence.

Highlights: ► Criteria for classification of the IRMs (Interstellar Radio Messages) were proposed. ► Using this classification all known IRMs are divided into two essentially different groups—scientifically based messages and pseudo-messages. ► Imitation of IRM transmissions by most of the exo-civilizations can cause the Great Silence.
